Indoor Tamburello is an adaptation of the Classic game and was first played in Italy in 1937. It uses a low compression tennis ball for play between two teams of three players each. The court measures 34m x 16 m, and, like the Classic game, has a centre line with two lines on either side to create the service ‘dead zone.’ Similarly, there is no net. Scoring is the same as the Classic game, while a match is usually won by the first team to win 13 games (in Italy) or 12 games (in France). Teams change ends every three games Indoor Tamburello is a popular sport during the winter season. The European Indoor Cup is held annually in February or March. It is a fast paced game, exciting to watch with players frequently hurling themselves across the court. Like the Classic game, it requires skill, strength, tactics and teamwork. A five-a-side ‘schools’ (scolastico) version of the game has become widely taught in Italian schools and colleges in recent years. This is consequently leading to increasing popularity for the 3-a-side version of the game there. |
